At this moment of great moral reckoning, we are speaking out with one voice to fulfill the most sacred obligation in Jewish tradition – pikuach nefesh, saving a life

Elul 4: Shabbat

With the 111 Palestinian, 2 Israeli and 3 Lebanese journalists killed in Gaza in our hearts, we ask for the courage and endurance to see and keep seeing, as Palestinian journalists have taught us. We begin by practicing noticing what is literally before us. May returning to this grounding help us to see what is, and to see beyond what is easy or comfortable for us to see.

Shabbat’s pause offers us time to practice noticing.

The poet Naomi Shihab Nye writes,

“The tiny journalist

will tell us what she sees

documents the moves, the dust, the soldiers blocking the road.”

Look around your physical space.

What are three things you see around you?  Find one that grounds you.

What is there but not visible?

How do these shape your perspective?
